C'est assurément la plus
belle introduction au monde des îles qui bordent le littoral
irlandais : Tory, Inishmurray, Achill, Clare, Inishbofin,
Aran, Blasket 1, Skelligs, Saltee … L'auteur reconnaît
que d'autres auraient mérité de figurer dans cette
sélection, mais le choix qu'il propose, avec sa dose d'arbitraire,
ouvre les portes d'un monde singulier, et singulièrement
attachant.
Au terme de son parcours, Thomas
Mason évoque le trajet de retour après un séjour
ornithologique à Saltee :
« Although I have
visited the island many times, the occasion on which I was accompanied
by my wife and family stands out prominently — the
weather was fine, there was perfect harmony, everything […]
went according to plan, and as I sat in the boat on our return
journey I thought of the scene in the Forest of Arden :
And
thus our life exempt from public haunt
Finds
tongues in trees,
Books
in the running brooks,
Sermons
in stones,
And
good in everything. »

E. Mason aperçoit, un jour de mai 1927, l'avion de Lindbergh
approchant du terme de sa traversée de l'Atlantique ;
le roman d'Eugène Nicole, « L'Œuvre
des mers » s'ouvre sur une évocation du
survol par Lindbergh des îles Saint-Pierre et Miquelon.
